Hank waits for his turn to be a calendar boy By Georgia O’Connor-Harding HANK THE border collie cross is looking for a new home. And if he gets one, the twoyear-old just might feature in Dogwatch Sanctuary Trust’s calendar – but not until 2019. The trust’s 2018 calendars are
now on sale, featuring rescued dogs which have been rehomed. Hank, a bright, lovely and playful animal, according to trust manager Pam Howard, has been without a home since October. Mrs Howard said many people had wanted to adopt Hank,
but so far the right match hadn’t been found. Hank had been at the city council pound before arriving at the trust, and had some “quirks” she said. She described Hank as “resource guarder” – a dog that growls and snarls at other

animals and people to stay away from an object it might be guarding. “He just needs an owner that understands when dogs have quirks you work with them and you don’t set them up to fail,” Mrs Howard said. •Turn to page 4

POPULAR camping spots, damaged in the floods that raged across Selwyn earlier this year, have re-opened in the nick of time for the holidays. Coes Ford and Chamberlains Ford are back up and running after the Selwyn River burst its banks with a peak flow of 697 cumecs, ripping through both camping grounds and damaging nearly everything in its path. Unsafe river fords were closed, children were sent home from school and properties in Leeston flooded as wet weather lashed the district earlier this year. District council reserves officer Chris Burke said the camping grounds were in a sorry state and required an incredible amount of work and perseverance over the last five months. “We are really pleased to have these two important camping grounds ready for the public to enjoy,” Mr Burke said. •Turn to page 9

from the editor’s desk I’M A bit of a dog sort of person. Others might say I’m a dog of a bloke, and if they do, I’d probably take it as a compliment. That’s why I’ve featured the 2018 Dogwatch calendar in today’s paper. The calendar is a fundraiser for this great organisation and the canines which feature in it are ones that they have rescued and rehomed. The system works like this: The dogs which end up in council pounds have seven days to be collected. The pounds then have the unenviable job of giving them the chop or rehoming them. This is where Dogwatch comes in. If there’s room, unwanted dogs are taken in and then the search for a suitable home begins. Hank, who features on page 1, has been at Dogwatch since late October. He has a few quirks but otherwise is a lovely dog, as most border collies are. Photographer Martin Hunter said he played ball for the pic. It would be nice for Hank to have a home. Santa letters thrill pre-schoolers

By Georgia O’Connor-Harding CHILDREN across Canterbury received a Christmas surprise in the mail – a personalised letter from a special man in a big red suit. Letters from Santa Claus have travelled all the way from the North Pole to children in Canterbury in response to the children’s wish list requests. The Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool and Nursery based in West Melton was one of many pre-schools and primary schools in New Zealand to receive the letters. The pre-school’s inventors, adventure and navigator classrooms had their Santa letters handed out to them at their Christmas concert recently. With a bit of help from New Zealand Post, Santa sent 73,000 letters to children in 1102 schools and early childhood education centres across the country. The Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool and Nursery owner Tracy Summerfield said the children were “blown away” and appreciated the gesture from NZ Post. She said the opportunity for children to write their letters to Santa was great for their literacy skills. Hatchimals, dolls, toy tractors, trucks, racing cars

News Wind and falling branch cause of fire By Georgia O’Connor-Harding SEVERE WIND and a falling branch caused a powerpole to catch fire in Leeston last week. The Leeston Volunteer Fire Brigade was called out to the fire at Lochheads Rd at about 4.30pm last Tuesday. Chief fire officer Lloyd Clausen said a severe southerly wind change caused a branch to break off a tree which fell across powerlines and caught fire. The branch then fell to the ground causing a small grass fire which burnt back towards the base of the pole. Mr Clausen said while the power pole wasn’t badly damaged, it was replaced by an Orion contractor. The replacement of the pole briefly caused a power outage along the road.

Doggone good calendars •From page 1 Hank is one of 12 dogs the trust is currently trying to rehome. In a bid to continue rehoming abandoned dogs, the trust has teamed up with Community Energy Action to create the 2018 calendar. The calendar’s message this year focuses on raising awareness for the rescuing and re-homing of abandoned dogs and educate people about energy efficiency. “It is a combined effort that has gone down very well. Some dogs just do not cope with cold weather,” Mrs Howard said. The trust has been producing calendars since about 2011. Funds raised go towards the operation of the rescue centre. “We have always had huge support from the community but this year we were sponsored by CEA. They have done a fantastic job,” Mrs Howard said. Dogwatch is a charitable trust which rescues and re-homes dogs and puppies which have ended up in the Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri pounds. After a seven day holding period the council becomes the legal owner and either re-homes the dog or puts it down.

Community centre almost ready for move to Shirley By Julia Evans MACFARLANE PARK is one step closer to becoming the transitional St Albans Community Centre building’s new home. The plan to move the building from Colombo St to the Shirley park was finalised at an extraordinary PapanuiInnes Community Board meeting this month. However, according to a city council staff report, resource consent still needs to be granted and the park’s classification changed. “Council staff will seek to change the reserve classification from Recreation Reserve to Local Purpose (Community Building) Reserve; there is a process to follow as outlined within the Reserves Act 1977, and the outcome is not able to be pre-determined,” the report said. If consent is granted but the classification is not changed, the

building would have to be removed from MacFarlane Park in 2021. It will take between two to eight months to move the building, depending on how quickly the consent is issued. The building has served as the St Albans Community Centre since the February 22, 2011, earthquake put the original centre out of action. But with the new St Albans centre rebuild about to start, the building will get another lease of life, replacing the Shirley Community Trust’s facility. As well as relocating the building, new paths, a park bench and a small car park with a cycle stand will be installed. The building has been gifted to the city council by the Lions International Club at a cost of $255,000. The city council approved $125,000 at the start of last month towards moving the building.

The district council also brought together some biodiversity experts to provide community help, removing river debris from plants and staking up flattened shrubs. At the Chamberlains Old Bridge Rd entrance broken fence lines were repaired, river debris was removed, shingle driveways were rebased and graded. Mr Burke said the current shingle drives were completely washed away leaving only a soil base. “We cleaned out the toilet areas and tested all equipment, checked the stability of all of the trees and removed any that had been compromised,” he said. The NZ Army also pitched in at Chamberlains, by providing 100 personnel for four hours through one of its youth programmes. Due to massive amount of relevelling works and reinstatement works of the Chamberlains Ford site, the grass in the area needs time to recover and regenerate. The district council has installed new signage at Coes and Chamberlains. It asks visitors to the area take time to read the new signs and follow the instructions.

Saluting Ellesmere’s talented juniors THE RIKI Ellison Memorial Hall at Ellesmere College was packed with parents, students and teachers for the junior prize-giving. Students Lucy Barns, Emma Frandi, Emma Johnson, Margarida Dias, Ione Dennis and Lennox Dunn received top academic awards. Awards: •Lucy Barns - First in year 7 for academic excellence. Lucy likes english, mathematics and science. She plays basketball and represents the Canterbury under-13 girls team. She also plays netball for the school and Dunsandel. She likes to play the
guitar and ukulele. She hopes to become a paediatrician. •Emma Frandi - First in year 8 for academic excellence. At school she likes mathematics and plays netball. Out of school she plays netball for the Ellesmere club. •Emma Johnson - First in year 9 for academic excellence. Her favourite subjects are english, mathematics, science, social studies and physical education. She played a lead role in the school’s recent production Into the Woods JR. Her interests are music (plays piano and euphonium). She

Other interests are playing netball for Southbridge, school volleyball and touch. In the future Ione wants to do something with art or science. Lennox loves physical education, history and hanging out with friends. His other interests are rugby, touch, ballet and he swims for the Southbridge Swim Club. Lennox’s future ambitions are to be a dancer.

BARBECUE RUMP STEAK WITH SMOKY RED CAPSICUM SAUCE
1 Tbsp smoked paprika 1 red chilli, finely diced ½ cup olive oil

4 pieces of rump steak 1 serving oil, for grilling
2 roasted red capsicums, peeled, seeded and chopped ½ red onion, chopped ¼ cup chopped parsley 4 cloves garlic, chopped ¼ cup red wine vinegar ¼ cup red wine 1 Tbsp honey 1 Tbsp dijon mustard
Directions To roast the capsicum, place it straight on to the flames in the barbecue and rotate until all of the outside is blackened. Place in a plastic bag and tie a knot in the top to make the capsicum sweat so the skin is easier to remove.

Thinly slice the cucumber. Place on a plate and scatter with the salt, sugar, dill and mint. Leave to cure for two hours then pat dry before serving with the salad. Scrub the mussels, remove any beards then steam until just open. Chop into quarters. Slice the tomatoes then arrange with the cucumber and mussels on a platter. Scatter with basil leaves and drizzle with olive oil.

Mix together all of the sauce ingredients and season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove the steaks from the fridge and allow to come to room temperature. Heat your barbecue to a medium to high heat. Pat the steaks dry and season well with salt and pepper. Cook on the barbecue turning only once during the cooking process. Fun trips to do in a day Selwyn stretches south to the Rakaia River, north to the Waimakariri River and west to the mountains, providing interesting places to explore. Some are well-known, others almost forgotten. Arthur’s Pass – Short walks through the township take in authentic baches, a quaint chapel and beech forest. There are also tramping tracks taking a few hours to several days. Look out for curious Keas. They peck at cars and steal what they can, and resist the temptation to feed them as this threatens their survival. Glentunnel – Many townships have domains ideal for sport and a picnic like Glentunnel. Check out the town’s historic buildings like the 1886 octagonal library built from bricks produced in the local kiln and museum (open every Sunday from 1-4pm). Hororata – A town with history, you can visit Coton’s Cottage (built in 1864) on fine Sunday afternoons while a little out of town the earthquake damaged, 1911 St John’s Church is a fine example of a local volcanic stone building. Coleridge Township – Originating as a result of the construction of the Coleridge Power Station, which opened in 1914 and still provides power to Christchurch, this sleepy holiday town sits on the banks of the Rakaia River, near to Lake Coleridge.
It has botanical easy walks and spacious picnic areas. Lake Ellesmere (Te Waihora) – This lake originally covered much of its surrounding farmland, explaining Greenpark and Lincoln’s good soil. There are a number of access points for boating, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, jet-skiing, eeling, bird watching and duck shooting (in season). Driving along Kaitorete Spit for views across the lake and out to sea. Pack a fishing rod and picnic for an enjoyable and relaxing day out. Banks Peninsula – Lyttelton’s food establishments vary in their cuisine and include healthy options. The harbour is ideal for boating and the many bays ideal for swimming and picnics. Orton Bradley Park is great for large groups. Stroll through the park’s Rhododendron garden, around its historic buildings, or up the hill. A small charge applies for day visits and camping. Kaituna Valley has an intimate and
sheltered domain with a short walk along a babbling brook. Stop at the 1934 St Kentigern’s Anglican Church, built from reinforced concrete with a Kaituna stone façade and Oamaru stone faced windows.
